About Us

The Alliance of Guyanese Canadian Organizations, commonly called The Alliance, was established on May 20th, 1991 as an umbrella organization to present a collective voice for the many Guyanese organizations in the Greater Toronto Area.

It was founded as a volunteer organization and is non-profit, service orientated in its operational procedures, with no political affiliation.

The goals of the various affiliate organizations are diverse. However, as Guyanese organizations, there are overlaps. The Alliance is involved in many activities that are of common interest to all its affiliates. Some of these activities are routine while others are undertaken as special projects.

Some activities include:

  • Participation in functions of affiliated organizations.
  • Liaison with the Guyana Consulate on issues of common interest.
  • Supporting and promoting Guyanese organizations in the implementation of programmes beneficial to Guyanese Canadians.
  • Providing advice and guidance to Guyanese organizations.
  • Liaison with Caribbean organizations on community concerns.
  • Providing support for Guyanese children seeking medical assistance in Canada and for natural disasters in Guyana.
  • Acting as a central contact for government, community organizations and businesses for the Guyanese Canadian Community.
  • Launching of a Building Fund in 2000 for the purpose of acquiring a community center.
  • Planning and participating in the annual celebration commemorating Guyana's Independence.

The Alliance has gained recognition among its member organizationsand individuals within the community. Members of the Board are actively involved in various leadership roles such as lobbying, networking and sponsorship within the wider community.
